Guidelines for Greening Your Concrete Specifications
Suggestions for adding green building related requirements to your concrete specifications are noted in bold-faced type referencing the appropriate articles and paragraphs within the MASTERSPEC®

SECTION 02780 – CONCRETE GRID & PERMEABLE INTERLOCKING PAVERS
This Section uses the term "Architect." Change this term to match that used to identify the design professional as defined in the General and Supplementary Conditions.

PART 1 - GENERAL
Light colored or porous concrete pavers reflects radiation of solar heat helping to reduce the urban heat island effect. Choice of paving materials can have a great effect on ambient air temperature in urban areas compared to suburban or rural areas. Using light colored concrete paving effectively reduces the ambient air temperature and therefore the energy required for cooling buildings and helps to maintain existing wildlife habitats and migration corridors. Porous concrete unit pavers are available and can reduce stormwater runoff by allowing stormwater to infiltrate and recharge the ground water rather than burden a municipal storm water and sewer system.
For LEED Projects – add Division 1 Section ‘LEED Requirements Summary’ for recommendations and requirements for recycled content, salvages materials, regional materials, stormwater management, and LEED submittal requirements for all concrete materials.
G. Submittals for Environmental Performance:
- Provide data indicating the percentage of post-industrial pozzolan cement substitution as a percentage of the full product composite by weight for unit pavers.
- Provide data indicating the percentage of recycled aggregate for unit paver and for aggregate fill.
- Provide product data stating the location where all products were manufactured and where the raw materials were harvested, extracted or recovered.
- Provide MSDS product information for all geotextile materials and product information indicating the percentage of recycled content.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE
PART 2 - PRODUCT
Consider concrete unit pavers that are made with a high percentage of cement substitution with coal fly ash or blast furnace slag and recycled content or salvaged sources for aggregate. Consider concrete unit pavers that are made locally to reduce the environmental impacts of transport. Consider porous or grid pavers where possible to minimize stormwater runoff and reduce urban heat island effects.

Bedding materials should allow infiltration of storm water to the natural grade. A soils test should be required to verify the percolation rate of soils at the site. Consider using crushed clean recycled concrete demolition waste for sub base and base course.
A. Consider geotextiles made from recycled plastics or natural-fiber materials which are biodegradable and generally environmentally preferable.

SECTION 09220 - PORTLAND CEMENT PLASTER
Part 1 – General
1.1 – SUMMARY
For LEED Projects – see Division 1 Section ‘LEED Requirements Summary’ for recommendations and requirements for recycled content, regional materials, FSC certified formwork, low-emitting concrete finishes and LEED submittal requirements for all concrete materials
Submittals for Environmental Performance:
1. Provide data indicating the percentage of post-industrial pozzolan (fly ash) cement substitution as a percentage of the full cement plaster composite by weight.
2. Provide product data indicating the percentage of post-consumer recycled steel content in each type of light gauge steel framing and wire mesh as a percentage of the full product composite by weight.
3. Provide product data stating the location where all products were manufactured and where the raw materials were harvested, extracted or recovered.
Part 2 – Products
2.2 – Nonstructural Steel Framing members, General
C. - Wire
Consider non-structural steel framing products with a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content. Cold formed metal framing typically has 20%-30% recycled content although some providers may manufacture with up to 90% recycled content. Plan for continuous rigid board insulation systems on the inside or outside of steel framing to avoid excessive thermal bridging and conductive heat losses or gains through the envelope. Avoid insulation products made with ozone depleting HCFC’s.
2.5 – Metal Lath
Consider metal lath made with a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content.
2.8 – Plaster Materials
A. – Portland Cement
1. Color For Finish Coats
Consider substituting a percentage of Portland Cement with Class F fly ash to reduce the environmental impacts of cement production as well as increasing the performance of the cement plaster. Fly ash substitution can increase water resistance and flexibility of cement plaster.
B. – Colorants For Job-Mix Finish Coats
Consider clay or mineral based natural pigments for plaster colorants.
